The COLOR of Us
written by: Jessica Nicole Bugarin
It was the color of the leaves outside
That day I first met you.
It was the color of your pants
As you smiled at me the first time,
I smiled back.
It was the color of my skirt
As I discovered
That it’s your favorite color.
It was the color of the sun
All those days we spent talking.
Deeper our conversations grew, well into the night.
It was the color of the moon
When we both stayed up late.
It was the color of light coming from my phone,
You knew things and you found
That it’s my favorite color.
It was the color of my cheeks
When you cupped my face in your hands,
And you told me love me.
When you gave me my first kiss,
It was the color of my lips.
Dizzy with thoughts of you,
My head spinning with your touch.
It was the color of ink on a letter I gave you,
It said I love you too.
It was the color of my dress
When you asked me to dance.
It was the color of flowers you gave me
That one Valentine’s Day.
You’d walk me home with my hand in yours,
And through the years we kept walking.
It was the color of my memories
That we’d created together.
With a love this strong
We’d never falter.
It was the color your shirt
When you left me that first time,
Airport goodbyes and hurried kisses
We wished would last.
It was the color of silence
When i couldn’t hear your voice
And I missed you more than I could bear,
Still together yet apart.
It was the color of echoes,
Your words in my head over and over,
You told me it was necessary.
It was the color of the atmosphere,
The skies and the people around me.
I had to cope while I was here
And you were all the way over there.
It was the color of my numbness
And all my stupid choices.
I felt you slipping away,
And we were barely holding on.
It was the color of dim hope,
Of fear that it would not turn to black.
And when it did
We held on even tighter than ever.
It was the color of dawn when I got up before the sun.
As we learn to start over,
We know now we should never be apart.
It was the color of the clouds,
And the roads that I have built.
I have fought and always will fight
For my way back to you.
It was the color of my shirt
When you cradled me into your arms,
And I knew I was home.
Day by day from then on
I stir in bed and wake up next to you.
Black hair and brown eyes on blue pillows,
A red lipstick stain on a white coffee mug,
Long drives in your green car,
And coming home to our grey cat,
My nails polished pink trailing on your skin,
Yellow sunrises and orange sunsets,
That is our life and our story.
This love will never fade from me.
